An old sailing ship had a rectangular sail that was 7 meters high and had a perimeter of 56 meters. What was the area of the sail?

Explanation:

Assuming that by the definition of a rectangle, two sides share the same length, we can assume that two sides of the rectangle have sides of 7 meters. This means that the two remaining sides had a length of 42 meters combined. Divided between the two sides, this means that one pair of the sides is 42 meters, so 21 meters a side. Combing all of this information, we know the rectangle is 21 by 7 meters. To find the area, all you need to do is multiply the length times the width, so 7 times 21, which is 147 meters squared.
