President Carter wanted to establish peace between Israel and Egypt. He focused on creating peace between Israel and Egypt because he hoped it would maintain oil supplies from the Middle East. President Jimmy Carter invited President Sadat (Egypt) and Prime Minister Menachem (Israel) in 1978 to come to the US. They met in secret at the presidential retreat Camp David in Maryland (the negotiations were tense). Carter played an important role in keeping both sides talking throughout the negotiations.

On September 17, 1978, the two sides came to an agreement and signed the accords (led to a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt after many years of war) that returned the Sinai to Egypt, established diplomatic relations between Egypt and Israel, and opened the Suez Canal to Israeli ships. Both Sadat and Menachem were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
