Race relations: In the 1920s, the Ku Klux Klan became more of an open social and political movement in the South rather than an underground terror group like during the period of Reconstruction. Lynchings were carried out during this decade against black people as well as Jews.

Immigration: The 1920s saw a new surge in nativist sentiments in immigration policies that led to the passage of the National Origins Act of 1924, which greatly reduced the numbers of Eastern and Southern European immigrants. Anti-Asian immigrant policies in California also were passed during this time.
