They took off on hoverboards at the same time, but after 12 minutes, Victoria’s hoverboard broke and she immediately started to run. If the race was a tie, how long, in minutes, did it last from start to finish?

at 12 mins

distance of Victoria = 3•12•v= 36v

distance of Max = 12v

after 12 mins

distance of Victoria = (t-12)v/3

distance of Max = (t-12)v

since the race was a tie, then

total distance of Victoria = total distance of Max

36v + (t-12)v/3 = 12v + (t-12)v

cancel v from both sides

36 + t/3 - 4 = t

algebraic manipulation

⅔ t = 32

t = 48 mins
