Derek has 50 inches of balsa wood. He used 36 7/8 inches to make a kite. He used 12 3/8 inches to make a model airplane. How much of the balsa wood is left?

Hello from MrBillDoesMath!

Answer:

3/4 inch

Discussion:

Total balsa wood = 50 inches

Remaining balsa wood =

Total balsa wood - 36 7/8 - 12 3/8 =

50 - 36 7/8 - 12 3/8 =

50 - (36 7/8 + 12 3/8) = => as 7/8 + 3/8 = 10/8 = 1 1/4

50 - ( 48 + 1 1/4) =

(50 - 48) - 1 1/4 =

2 - 1 1/4 =

3/4 inch

BTW: hard to believe that much wood remains as wood is usually lost in the cutting process!

Thank you,

MrB
