This is because fission is borne from splitting heavy atoms into lighter atoms, releasing high energy particle in the process such as neutrons, alpha and beta particles. Nuclear fusion fuses lighter atoms into heavier atoms producing very few radioactive particles. There is also fewer chances of a meltdown of a fusion reactor compared to a fission reactor hence reducing chances of an accident.
