What do you think George Wallace meant by "It is ironical that this event occurs as we approach the celebration of Independence Day. On this day we won our freedom. On this day we have largely lost it

Well,

He believed very firmly in the rights of the states and local governments to control the outcome of their own future through choice separate from federal government. George Wallace was spreading how he perceived the situation by pointing out that when the federal government removes citizen's rights, it is a gloomy day for local people who share the belief that they should determine their own moral issues or their own course of social justice.
