when the equation is written in the form ax^2 +bx+c

f(x) = 3x^2 +24x+48

a = 3 b = 24 and c =48

discriminant = 24^2 - 4(3)*(48)

=576-576

if discriminant = 0 we have 1 real root

if discriminant <0 we have 2 complex roots
