The table shows the maximum and minimum depths of two submarines. Find the range of depths for each submarine. Then determine which submarine has the greater range of depths.

Submarine A Submarine B
Minimum Depth −319 ft −273 ft
Maximum Depth −846 ft −745 ft
The range of submarine A is
feet and the range of submarine B is
feet.

Question 2

So the range is how far the submarine can go, in between the minimum and maximum depths. The first submarine has to go down 319 feet, and it can go all the way down to 846 feet, so you subtract the two numbers to find the space in between which is 527 ft. That is the range of the first submarine. Do the same for the second and you get 472 ft. Now you see that sub A has a greater range with 527 ft.

Answer:

Submarine A has the greater range of depth.

Explanation:

For submarine A,

Minimum depth = -319 ft

Maximum depth up to which submarine can go = -846 ft

Therefore, range of depth by which submarine A can go = -846 - (-319)

= -846 + 319

= -527 feet

Similarly for submarine B,

Minimum depth = -273 ft

Maximum depth up to which submarine B can reach = -745 feet

Range of depth by which submarine B can go = -745 - (-273)

= -745 + 273

= -472 ft

Therefore, submarine A has the greater range of depth.
