A humming bird lives in a nest that is 30 feet high in a tree. The humming bird flies 34 feet to get from its nest to a flower on the ground. How far is the flower on the ground from the base of the tree.

Assuming the tree is perfectly vertical, Pythagorous theorum can be used with its flight path as the hypotenuse and the tree as the vertical.

{a}^(2) + {30}^(2) = {34}^(2)
a=16 feet
