1. You can apply the Elimination method:

- Mulitply the first equation by -2:


-2(1/4x-1/2y)=8(-2)


-1/2x+y=-16

- Sum both equations and solve for y:


-1/2x+y=-16 \\1/2x+3/4y=-5\\----------\\7/4y=-21\\y=-12

- Substitute the value obtained (y=-12) in one the original equations and then solve for x:
