Do you think civilian (nonmilitary) control of the military is an important part of U.S. democracy? Why or why not? What are the advantages to this system? Are there disadvantages?

the foundation of american society are based upon the government working for the people; that is how democracy works, so the military being controlled by the people is a necessity for the democratic system to function. there a couple advantages and disadvantages to this just like any system. the advantages being no wars the people don't want (in theory), no suppression of american rights by the military and the overall moral of the troops is going to be greater than that of a conscripted force because their fighting voluntarily. the disadvantages are during time of war, because if the war is unpopular troop moral will plunder, the army will have to draft soldiers in (this was the case during Vietnam) and if it drags on too long the fighting force will be severely weakened by a lack of new recruits. i hope this helped there's probably some grammar mistakes in this but the general answer/ main idea should the trick for ya

I think it is an important part of U.S. democracy because it contributes the the U.S. in a major way. The creators of the U.S. Constitution worked to ensure the military would be under civilian control. When they wrote the Constitution they separated the responsibilities for the military, placing the responsibilities firmly in civilian hands. Congress has the power to declare war and to make the rules for governing the military. There are some disadvantages, though. The American Civil War of 1861-1865 was the period of greatest danger to civilian control of the military. As the war progressed, more and more people called for a military dictatorship. Military officers stayed away from politics and many even refused to vote, feeling that this would somehow influence their service.
