A baseball has a mass of 0.145 kg and approaches a bat at 40.0 m/s. After it is hit, the ball leaves the bat at 50.0 m/s directly back. Find the impulse of the bat on the ball.

7.25 kg*m/s
13.1 kg*m/s
5.80 kg*m/s
1.45 kg*m/s

Impulse is defined as change in momentum of object

so here we can say

Impulse = final momentum - initial momentum

I = P_f - P_i

I = m(v_f - v_i)

here we know that

m = 0.145 kg

v_f = 50 m/s

v_i = - 40 m/s

now we will have

Impulse = 0.145 kg(50 m/s + 40 m/s)

Impulse = 13.05 kg m/s

so impulse of the bat on ball is approx 13.1 kg m/s
