A metal rod needs to be 9 feet and 5.5 inches in length. The sections of the poles being used are each 1 foot and 10.5 inches long. How many 1ft 10.5in sections would be needed to complete the 9ft 5.5in metal rod? And how many inches of material will be left?

Let's first get rid of the feet and turn everything into inches.

1 foot = 12 inches.


9 * 12 + 5.5 = 113.5


1 * 12 + 10.5 = 22.5


We need a rod that's 113.5 inches long, each section is 22.5 inches.


22.5x = 113.5 Simple division here to get 5.


We now do 22.5 * 5 to get 112.5 A little bit off aren't we? So we can just add 1 to how many poles there will be making it 6.


22.5 * 6 = 135 Now we are over.


We would need 6 poles which add up to 135 inches.


We can now do 135 - 113.5 to get 21.5 inches left which are left.
