If on increasing ( decreasing ) x there is increase ( decrease) in y

that is if there is same change in one variable on changing another in same proportion . Then x and y are said to be in direct proportional.

On the contrary

If on increasing ( decreasing ) x there is decrease(increase) in y

that is if there is same change in one variable on changing another in same proportion . Then x and y are said to be inversely proportional.
