I think your diagram had an error because the instruction says that it is a SQUARE frame with sides that are 8 inches long.

Anyways, following the question, the area of the shaded parts should be:
2(8 x 2) + 2(8 - 2 - 2)(2)
= 32 + 16
= 48 sq in.
