Rome’s first civil war began as the result of conflict between A. Rival military leaders
Rome’s first civil war
The first war in Rome, called the Social War or the Italian War, started in 91 BCE and went on until 88 BCE. It started because generals in Rome were fighting against each other.
During this time, there was a big problem about the rights and status of Rome's Italian friends. They were not given full Roman citizenship. The allies, called the socii, wanted more rights in the Roman Republic.
The problem got worse when Roman leader Livius Drusus suggested some changes. He wanted to give Roman citizenship to the socii. However, his changes were strongly disliked by traditional people in Rome, like the Senate and rich people, who were afraid of losing their power and influence.
