The Protestant Reformation represented a major 16th century European movement which goal initially was to reform the beliefs and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. The Protestant Reformation sought to extend their power and control at the expense of the Church. This reformation was considered areligious and political challenge to papal authority promoted by Martin Luther.

Martin Luther claimed that the Bible, not the pope, was the central means to discern God’s word.
