Althoguh the civil rights movement achieved a lot in its time, it was difficult for people who were involved in it to predict this. Therefore, it was not always clear how the movement was taking place, and this led to impatience among some African Americans. Many people felt that progress was coming too slowly. They also believed that the movement's leaders were compromising a lot in order to achieve change.

For some African-Americans involved in the non-violent civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s, there was a sense that the leadership of the movement was making too many compromises and giving away more than they were getting in return.
