Explanation :

A coil suspended freely, points in some direction when no current is passed through it.

On the application of current through the coil, a magnetic field would generate. The current can be detected using a compass which points in the direction of the magnetic field.

Also, the direction of the magnetic field is given by Fleming's left-hand rule.
