Like a boil that can never be cured as long as it is covered up but must be opened with all its pus-flowing ugliness to the natural medicines of air and light, injustice must likewise be exposed, with all of the tension its exposing creates, to the light of human conscience and the air of national opinion before it can be cured.

MLKJ appeals to the church leaders logos and pathos through his figurative language. He attacks the logos by using a comparison to something that will make sense to the common public. Because it makes sense to anyone it and creates imagery he can persuade the leaders to do things. The imagery as well is how he approaches the pathos. Many can imagine or know what he is explaining feels so they sympathize toward the pain.
