This Dust Was Once the Man

This dust was once the man,
Gentle, plain, just and resolute, under whose cautious hand,
Against the foulest crime in history known in any land or age,
Was saved the Union of these States

Walt Whitman

What is the "foulest crime in history"?

The Creation of United States: Incorrect This is mentioned as a consequense of facing the foulest crime in history, but not the crime itself.

Election of Pres. Lincoln: Incorrect. This was just something that happened and even though Lincoln had a strong influence on the civil war it is not referenced in the text.

Civil War or slavery: Correct. This is considered the foulest crime because people loose their freedom in the hands of other people, for even before they loose their lives they have lost the condition of human being in the eyes of the slaver and a big part of society at the time of the civil war.

Death or warfare: Inorrect. This has been a constant problem for humanity through history, and there was a lot of death and warfare during the civil war in order to save the union of states but men who die at war are considered free.
