In one of the essays , "An Economical Project for Diminishing the Cost of Light" he frankly wrote that French people can save 64 million pounds of wax if they wake up early in the morning.He hilariously gave the ideas of ringing church bells and firing cannons as an alarm clock to wake people in early morning.

His humor was the reason why he refused to write Declaration of Independence because he though his subtle jokes anywhere in the declaration can distract from the people from the document's purpose. Therefore, he recommended that Thomas Jefferson should write it in place of him.
