The light reaction occur in the thylakoid membranes. Water is split, providing a source of electrons and giving off O2 gas as a by-product. Light energy absorbed by chlorophyll molecules built into the membranes is sued to drive the transfer of electrons and H+ from water to NADP+, reducing it to NADPH.
