In the seminal Supreme Court case, Marbury v. Madison, Chief Justice Marshall carved out a renewed purpose for the once useless Supreme Court.
In Marbury, Marshall developed the doctrine of judicial review by which the Supreme Court had the right, duty, and obligation to review the actions of the executive and legislative branch to determine if the legislative and executive branches were acting constitutionally.
