\cos^(4) x-\sin^(4) x\\\\=(\cos^(2) x+\sin^(2) x)(\cos^(2) x-\sin^(2) x)\\\\=\cos^(2) x-\sin^(2) x\\\\=\cos^(2) x-(1-\cos^(2) x)\\\\=2\cos^(2) x-1
