Look at the picture.

Subtract the area of a square 6 yd. × 6 yd. from the area

of a rectangle 12 yd. × 9 yd.

The area of a rectangle:

AR = (12)(9) = 108 yd.²

The area of a square:

AS = (6)(6) = 36 yd.²

The area of the figure:

A = AR - AS → A = 108 yd.² - 36 yd.² = 72 yd.²

first way is to find area of the shape if you imagine that there is no cut-out so area is 12*9=108 and then you substract the area of a cut-out which is 6*6=36 and you get 108-36=72
another way is to divide the shape into two smaller ones, so area of the shape on the left + area of the shape on the right equals to 9*6+3×6=54+18=72
Either way you'll get the same result
