The correct answer is 4) was executed for his role in Pottawatomie.

The option that can be applied to John Brown is "he was executed for his role in Pottawatomie."

John Brown was an abolitionist that wanted to end slavery and even accepted the use of the force to do so. He participated in the Pottawatomie Massacre on May 24, 1856, in Franklin County, Kansas. Brown and other abolitionists killed five people that supported slavery, close to Pottawatomie creek. After the massacre, he was caught and sentenced to death. This incident was part of the many violent events in the period known as bleeding Kansas, before the beginning of the Civil War.
