a local boys club sold 156 bags of mulch and made a total of $613. It sold two types of mulch: hardwood for $4.25 a bag and pine bark for $3.75 a bag. How many bags of each kind of mulch did it sell?

Explanation:

let number of bags of hardwood be x and for pine be y

4.25x+3.75y=613----equation1

x+y=156 ---equation2

rewrite equation2 as y=156-x

substitute to equation1 = 4.25x+3.75(156-x)=613

simplify to get x = 56

from equation 2, y=156-x

y=156-56 = 100

Therefore

Hardwood = 56 bags,

Bag and Pine = 100 bags
