One benefit would be that their would be more opinions. One risk is that people would pick randoms to get it over with

Benefit:

The clearest benefit to the country would be an increase in voter turnout. Leaders would then be more representative of the people they actually represent as opposed to just the people that turn out.

Risks:

Mandatory voting would propel uninformed voters into the spotlight. One could presume, perhaps inaccurately, that the people that vote are "informed" about what they are voting on. With mandatory voting, that might not be the case.
