Similar triangles states the length of the corresponding sides are in proportion.

In a given similar triangles:

Labelled the diagram:

Triangle BAC and triangle DAC are similar.

then;

Corresponding sides:


(AB)/(AD) = (BC)/(DC)

AB = x units , BC = 5 units, AD = 15 units and DC = BD-BC = 8-5 = 3 units


(x)/(15) = (5)/(3)

By cross multiply we get;


3x = 15 \cdot 5

Simplify:


3x = 75

Divide both sides by 3 we get;


(3x)/(3)=(75)/(3)

Simplify:

x = 25 units

Therefore, the value of x is 25 units.
