Ethan's dresser contains 4 pairs of shorts, 1 each in the colors red, black, blue, and grey. His dresser also contains 3 T-shirts, one each in the colors black, navy, and grey.

Ethan has to get dressed in the dark, so he grabs a pair of shorts and a T-shirt at random from his dresser.

What is the probability that he selects a grey pair of shorts and a grey T-shirt?

Answer:

(1)/(12)

Explanation:

In basic probability theory, AND means MULTIPLICATION and OR means ADDITION.

We want to find probability of grey pair of shorts AND grey T-Shirt. So we need to multiply the individual probabilities.

P(grey shorts) =
(1)/(4) (total 4 colors and 1 grey)

P(grey tshirt) =
(1)/(3) (total 3 colors and 1 grey)

P(grey shorts AND grey tshirt) =
(1)/(4)*(1)/(3)=(1)/(12)
