He seeked a separation from the catholic because the Catholic church refused to grant him a divorce from Catherine of Aragon, who failed to produce a male heir. In addition he also wanted, Bring church property in Britain under his control.

Hope that helps!!

In 1533, Henry VIII wanted to divorce his wife, Catherine of Aragon, because she bore him no male heir and the pope wouldn't let him. Henry broke from the church and married the now pregnant Anne Boleyn in a secret ceremony. This solved his problem, but Henry was excommunicated by the Pope. The English Reformation had begun.
