Apostrophes can be used to indicate possession or relationship between members in a family (possessive anglosaxon); apart from their common use of contractions.

When used for indicating possession, the noun which possesses something has the apostrophe. For example:

This is Jerry's smartphone.

Argentina's first school was built hundreds of years ago.


Examples of the apostrophe for indicating how members are related:

Lauren is Jack's daughter.

My boyfriend is my best friend's brother.
