The barometer shown in fig. p1.35 contains mercury ( 5 13.59 g/cm3 ). if the local atmospheric pressure is 100 kpa and g 5 9.81 m/s2 , determine the height of the mercury column, l, in mmhg and inhg.

Given:

Density of mercury (ρ) = 513.59 g/cm3 = 513.59*10^3 kg/m3

Patm = 100 kPa

g = 59.81 m/s2

To determine:

The height (h) of the column

Calculation:

Patm = ρgh = 513590*59.81*h

100,000 = 3.0718*10^7*h

h = 0.00325 m

1 inch = 0.0254 m

h = 0.128 inches

Ans: height (h) = 0.00325 m or 0.128 inches
