Mauro Prosperi born in Rome in the year 1955, was an Italian police officer and modern pentathlete who became popular after he got lost in the Sahara Desert during the Marathon des Sables (marathon of the sands) in 1994.
Mauro Prosperi was 39 years old when he took part in the 1994 Marathon des Sables, a six-day, 250km (155-mile) race through the Sahara reported as the toughest race of its kind.
The body systems that were affected during Mauro Prosperi's journey across the desert was the nervous system, the digestive system, and the circulatory system, it was reported that Mauro's liver was damaged after the marathon, however, he was able to recover after two years.
The weather was very harsh and that got him highly dehydrated, the best way for him to conserve his energy, was to walk during the morning hours, when it is cold, or in the evening hours when the weather is calm, that way he doesn't get too tired from the heat which causes dehydration. Another thing is to set the compass in the right direction, a wrong direction will mean walking longer hours, which will take more of his energy.
