Which of the following best describes the relationship between glucose and complex molecules such as hormones? A.) Glucose acts as a catalyst to create complex molecules such as hormones but does not contribute to the needed building materials. B.) The atoms that make up glucose are separated and combined with other atoms to make complex molecules such as hormones. C.) Glucose provides the energy to create complex molecules such as hormones but does not contribute to the needed building materials. D.) The atoms that make up glucose react with complex molecules such as hormones to release stored energy.

The correct answer is: C.) Glucose provides the energy to create complex molecules such as hormones but does not contribute to the needed building materials.

Glucose (and other simple sugars, monosaccharaides like fructose) is the main energy molecules of the cell. Glucose is firstly broken down through the process of glycolysis to the product called pyruvate. After that, in the reactions of the citric acid cycle and oxidative phosphorylation, oxidation continues to the carbon dioxide and water, yielding energy mostly in the form of ATP. ATP is necessary for all of the anabolic processes in the cell, including the hormone synthesis.
