In a situation where one finds a fossil of new organism, and also wants to name the organism, there's multiple factors that can influence the name of the organism.

The location of the place where the fossil is found can play a role, the name or surname of the founder of the fossil can be included, some physical characteristic of the fossil, or maybe something in which is suspected to be its behavior or lifestyle. One thing is for sure, the decision will be subjective and according to the ''taste'' of the founder.

If I find a fossil, let's say a new type of felid, that is large, powerful muscular body, and sabreteeth, I would chose a name like Feris interfectorem, meaning brutal killer.
