5 books + x = 12 books

Subtract 5 from both sides to solve for x, which is representing the number of books Sam read last week.

5 - 5 + x = 12 - 5

x = 12 - 5

x = 7

Sam read 5 books this week and some books last week. If Sam read 12 books in all, how many books (b) did Sam read last week?
