Caedmon was a cowherd who later became a monk the excerpt describes him as someone who was once lost and then was found he did not know he had the gift of song until a miracle made him believe that he did.

  1. Caedmon is the poet who began the English poetic tradition. He was a cowherd who had visions of God in his sleep at the cowshed.
  2. The hymn of Caedmon was the only poem that has been kept. An VIII century monk, Bede, was the person who managed to keep it and describe it. The poem kept the Latin version and the beauty and dignity Caedom had when he praised God in public places. The rhythmic style of the poem, in Bede's opinion, had to show Caedom's shyness and dignity.
