The Nullification crisis occurred as a result of Southern opposition to the Tariffs of 1828 ands 1832. Southern opposition to the tariffs revolved around the issue of the extent of federal power over the states. To avoid conflict with the federal government, the Southern states had to comply with the wishes of the federal government and obey all federal laws.
