Annotate the following passage from Franklin D Roosevelt's inaugural address "In such a spirit ". Be sure and include the following:

In such a spirit on my part and on yours we face our common difficulties. They concern, thank God, only material things. Values have shrunken to fantastic levels; taxes have risen; our ability to pay has fallen; government of all kinds is faced by serious curtailment of income; the means of exchange are frozen in the currents of trade; the withered leaves of industrial enterprise lie on every side; farmers find no markets for their produce; the savings of many years in thousands of families are gone.

1. a title that summarizes the passage

I would give this speech the title 'No Markets and no money for their produce.' This summarizes the problem presented in the text, how taxes have risen and farmers can't find a place ro sell their products. This wa called The Great Depression's state.

2. notes in the margin or below the paragraph, perhaps including questions to which you'd like answers

I would like to know if at the end of this speech Roosevelt proposed a solution for the problem. so i would ask. Did Roosevelt propose a solution for this problem? It worked? What the farmers were doing with their products since they couldn't sell it?

3. question marks or asterisks marking important information

**'the withered leaves of industrial enterprise lie on every side;'** This is a similie to understand or visualise the state of the economy. *; This metaphor represents how the state of the economy of the moment is dying, it is in decline.

**In such a spirit on my part and on yours we face our common difficulties.** This introductory phrase tells the audience that it is a problem that concerns everyone, this attracts the attention of society and they are moved by the speech.

4. the underlining of important information

Our ability to pay has fallen; government of all kinds is faced by serious curtailment of income

The savings of many years in thousands of families are gone.

5. any other marks or notes to help you understand the passage.

Some other marks that can help you understand the speech are

"In such a spirit on my part and on yours we face our common difficulties. They concern, thank God, only material things"

"Our ability to pay has fallen; government of all kinds is faced by serious curtailment of income..."

All this information are important since they gives you visual and emotional feelings about the problem presented.
