In a nonfiction book you would use the author's prior knowledge of the topic. You don't depend on the accuracy of the facts in the passage, and you want to be pulling information out of the passage which means that you have to use the author's knowledge. THE AUTHOR'S PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPIC.
