"Winton's lifesaving efforts began in 1938, when the young British stockbroker grew concerned about what was happening at the time. Germany had invaded Austria and annexed the neighboring Sudetenland. Thousands of people, mainly Jews or political opponents of the Nazis, were displaced from their homes. Growing violence against Jews in Germany and Austria also worried Winton. Winton traveled to a Czechoslovakian refugee camp to see how he could help the Sudeten refugees. While there, Winton grew convinced that war was looming and that Germany would try to annex Czechoslovakia next. He believed the country was in grave danger.
