If x and y are 2 sets such that n(x) is 17, n(y) is 23, n(xUy) is 38, find x intersection y

n(x) + n(y) = 17 + 23 = 40.

But n(x U y) = 38 so 40 - 38 = 2 elements are common to set x and set y.

Therefore n (x ∩ y) = 2.
