The Battle of Ypres was a turning point in world history, not because of any particular ground gained, but because the Second Battle of Ypres marks the first time that a major world power used chemical warfare.

After the Germans deployed the poison gas, the British and the French quickly developed their own poison gas and used it against the Germans.
