The idea that those who have faith in Christ, adhering to the teaching of the Bible, will receive God's grace is called Puritan Doctrine.

The increment in literacy that came with the Age of Enlightenment led to common people taking an interest in reading the Bible on their own and this created differences with the Church - these people were called Puritans and desired to either be separated from other Christian groups or to transform the Church from within.

Puritans believed that each person was accountable to God in their own way, and that they didn't need bishops or priests to intervene in their search for Grace.
