x=4, y=2

Explanation:

2x - y = 6

x + y = 6

Add these together to eliminate y

2x - y = 6

x + y = 6

3x = 12

Divide by 3

3x/3 = 12/3

x=4

But we still need y

x+y =6

4+y =6

Subtract 4 from each side

4+y-4 = 6-4

y=2
