The author uses physical descriptions, private and shared thoughts, the behavior of the character, and also uses the conversations to define the character. This characterization is reflected in the text when the narrator says "But I stayed good friends with the boy who had been wounded his first day at the front, because he would never know now how he would have turned out; so he could never be accepted either, and I liked him because I thought perhaps he would not have turned out to be a hawk either."
In "In Another Country? "The narrator is part of the characters that participate in the story, in the previous excerpt we see that the author uses characterization of the narrator through his memories, the feelings he had with others and his hopes. Further in the story will be given more details that helps us finish characterizing the narrator as an American soldier (p.2, l.35) who is not married (p.3, l.21-22) and who enjoys playing soccer with his friends.
