In my life for the first time [and,] the image made me believe [of] my mother that I could change [were] the way things *were*.

remove and & of because it makes no sense in the context of the sentence and move were to the end of the sentence.

Answer:

The rules of syntax have been broken.

Step-by-step explanation:

In the given sentence, the rules of syntax have been broken.

In linguistics, rules of syntax refer to the rules which govern the order in which the words combine to form phrases and sentences.

For the given example, if rules of syntax were followed properly, the correct sentence would have been:

"For the first time in my life, the image of my mother made me believe that I could change the way things were."
